Hurricane Melissa kills three people in Jamaica

Hurricane Melissa is continuing to wreak havoc across the Caribbean, killing three people in Jamaica and quickly becoming the most powerful storm to hit the world this year.

The storm made landfall in Jamaica on Monday night, just days after the government had been warned it could make landfall.

Some residents in the capital, Kingston, were ordered to evacuate to safer areas.

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness also ordered schools to close and the Norman Manley and Sangster airports to be closed.

Melissa is the first major hurricane to hit Jamaica. The last was Gilbert in 1981, which killed 49 people.

In addition to Jamaica, the storm has killed four people in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

The United States National Hurricane Center said that this storm is the strongest to hit in 2025, with maximum sustained winds of 290 kilometers per hour.
