In a rare and hard fought success, Haitian police have announced the reclaiming of a crucial telecommunications center from heavily armed gangs, signaling an early triumph for the country’s new police chief and the U.N backed multinational mission.
The operation unfolded at the Téléco site in the once peaceful Kenscoff area, starting before dawn on Monday and lasting nearly two hours.
According to Michel-Ange Louis Jeune, spokesperson for Haiti’s National Police, officers uncovered a large stockpile of firearms, including automatic weapons with their serial numbers erased, along with more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition, after overpowering the gang members.
