Guinea-Bissau on Edge as President Embalo Refuses to Step Down

Midnight on Thursday marked the official end of the president’s term.

Yet instead of handing over power, Embalo has remained in office, a move the opposition has denounced as an illegal attempt to cling to power.

He insists he will continue carrying out his presidential duties until new elections take place on November 23, where he is widely expected to contest for a second term.

Analysts now warn that the country could be heading toward a fresh constitutional showdown, with fears of mounting political instability.

Under Guinea-Bissau’s constitution, a president is allowed two five year terms. The opposition maintains that Embalo’s mandate expired on February 27, but the Supreme Court ruled it should last until September 4.
