Guinea-Bissau in Turmoil as New Prime Minister Takes Office

Residents in Bissau woke up on Friday to the announcement of a new Prime Minister. Ilidio Vieira Té has been appointed to the role and will continue serving as Minister of Finance for the next 12 months.

With restrictions lifted, the atmosphere in Bissau is mostly calm. Public and private transportation is functioning normally, including taxis and motorcycle taxis.

Markets are open and traders are selling goods, although there are fewer buyers. Public institutions remain closed, except for hospitals, health centers, and schools, due to concerns from those managing the facilities.

Even though restrictions have been removed, only government offices are operating. Private businesses are open as well but with fewer staff members. Gas stations are working as usual and vehicles are refueling.

Guinea-Bissau has plunged deeper into political crisis after a disputed presidential election was followed by a controversial coup.

Opposition figures are questioning the legitimacy of the takeover, highlighting the role of ousted President Umaro Sissoco Embaló.

As one of the world’s poorest nations, Guinea-Bissau continues to struggle with repeated coups and political instability, showing the fragility of its democratic system and the long history of unrest.
