Gabon Awaits Key Election Results After Historic Weekend Vote

Gabon is set to receive election results on Monday that could shape the future of General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema’s leadership.

More than 900,000 citizens went to the polls on Saturday in the nation’s first legislative and local elections since the 2023 military coup that ended the Bongo dynasty’s long rule.

Voters were tasked with choosing 145 parliament members along with local councillors, who will later be responsible for indirectly electing senators, mayors, and regional assembly presidents.

Balloting wrapped up on Saturday evening, with counting starting immediately after. Observers were granted access to monitor the process.

By early Monday morning, official results had not yet been announced.

The election proceeded largely without incident, though in the commune of Ntoum, a suburb of Libreville, voting was canceled in one constituency after tensions flared between candidates.

This vote comes six months after Gabonese citizens handed a strong mandate to military junta leader Brice Oligui Nguema as president. The outcome of the legislative race will now decide whether he can count on a majority in parliament moving forward.
