DRC forces kidnap Ugandan soldier
A group of eight unidentified DRC soldiers have attacked their Ugandan counterparts who were on an anti-illegal fishing operation in Lake Albert, kidnapping one of them. According to the Nile Post, the abducted Ugandan soldier has been identified as Pte Edwin Chelimo. He was arrested at 6am on May 14, 2025. The West Nile State Police Spokesperson, SP Collins Asea, said the DRC soldiers seized Pte Chelimo’s rifle, a patrol boat and its engine. “When they were returning to Dei to park, they were ambushed by about eight DRC soldiers. They kidnapped Pte Chelimo along with his rifle, boat and engine,” SP Asea said. It is not unusual for the DRC army to attack Ugandans as they have been participating in operations against the ADF and CODECO terrorist groups in Ituri and North Kivu provinces since November 2021. A joint investigation has been launched to identify the soldiers who kidnapped Pte Chelimo, the reasons for his abduction, and efforts are being made to secure his release.
