At least 20 people are feared dead after a boat capsized in northwestern DRC. The incident happened on Lake Maï-Ndombe on Thursday as the boat was transporting passengers to the capital, Kinshasa. Among the passengers was a newly ordained Catholic deacon, the local Diocese said in a statement on Friday.
Emmanuel Bola, a resident from the nearby town of Inongo, told The Associated Press by phone on Saturday that the boat was travelling from Kiri to Kinshasa when it tipped over between the villages of Bobeni and Lobeke around 8 p.m. Thursday night.
The central government has not yet confirmed an official death toll. Kevani Nkoso, governor of Maï-Ndombe province, said “we are waiting for details from teams on the ground to determine the number of people killed and the number of survivors.”
