DR Congo National Assembly Speaker Vital Kamerhe Resigns Ahead Of Leadership Vote

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, Vital Kamerhe has stepped down from his role as President of the National Assembly, just before a scheduled vote on a petition challenging his leadership.

The announcement came Monday evening through the Assembly’s first vice president, with Kamerhe himself addressing lawmakers shortly afterward. He described his resignation as a personal sacrifice meant to redirect the nation’s focus toward what he called “the real challenges”: unity, sovereignty, and economic progress.

The campaign pushing for Kamerhe’s removal centered on internal issues tied to the functioning of the National Assembly.

Supporters of Kamerhe questioned the legitimacy of the petition, while opposition dismissed the entire activity as a political charade.

President Felix Tshisekedi, speaking from New York, exempted himself from the matter, insisting he had no involvement and reaffirming Kamerhe as “a brother and ally.”

This development follows Kamerhe’s 2020 involvement in embezzlement charges, a ruling later overturned, before he made his political comeback in 2024.
