The United Nations issued a warning on Friday about a deadly cholera outbreak endangering the lives of refugees fleeing Sudan’s Darfur region, as essential supplies run dangerously low.
In Chad’s Iridimi camp, many refugees lack access to proper sanitation and clean drinking water, making them extremely vulnerable to the diseases. According to the World Health Organization, cholera is a rapidly spreading, very contagious infection that causes severe diarrhea, leading to life serious dehydration and, if untreated, death within hours.
The illness spreads mainly through consuming food or water contaminated with the bacteria causing it.
Dr. Ilham Nour, WHO Senior Emergency Officer, revealed that over 100,000 cases have been reported since July 2024.
