Brazil has officially entered the case brought by South Africa at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing Israel of committing “genocide” in the Gaza Strip.
In a statement on Friday, the Hague based court confirmed that Brazil invoked Article 63 of the ICJ statute, submitting a declaration of intervention in the proceedings.
This provision allows any United Nations member state to step into a case when the interpretation of a treaty they are party to is in dispute. Brazil argued that Israel is in breach of the 1948 Genocide Convention.
The ICJ added that South Africa and Israel are now invited to “furnish written observations on the declaration of intervention.”
Back in July, Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced its intention to participate, condemning what it described as Israeli aggression in Gaza and the West Bank, while warning that “impunity” was eroding international law.
