Border Tensions Turn Deadly: Uganda–South Sudan Clash Leaves Soldiers Dead

Tensions flared into violence along the Uganda–South Sudan border, resulting in the deaths of at least four soldiers, according to Uganda’s military. The deadly encounter unfolded in Uganda’s remote West Nile region, reportedly after South Sudanese troops crossed into Ugandan territory and refused to retreat.

Uganda’s army spokesman, Maj. Gen. Felix Kulayigye, stated that three South Sudanese soldiers were killed in retaliation after a Ugandan soldier lost his life during the incursion. In contrast, a South Sudanese official claimed that five of their troops died in what he described as a “surprise attack.”

Military leaders from both nations have now agreed to a ceasefire and pledged to investigate the incident. Although the two neighbors have long disputed segments of their shared border, a joint demarcation committee is actively working toward a resolution by 2027.

While minor rivalry have happened in the past, such fatal clashes between the two allied forces are considered unusual.
