Boko Haram Attack in Borno Leaves Over 60 Dead, Homes Burnt

Dozens of people have been killed after Boko Haram militants launched a deadly nighttime assault on a village in northeastern Nigeria where residents had only recently returned from an internally displaced persons camp, authorities confirmed.

The attack on Darul Jamal in Bama Local Government Area happened late Friday, leaving at least 60 people dead, according to a resident, Mohammed Babagana, who spoke to The Associated Press.

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, who visited the affected community on Saturday evening, told reporters that the death toll had surpassed 60.

“We sympathize with the people and have pleaded with them not to abandon their homes as we have made arrangements to improve security and provide food and other essential items they have lost,” Zulum said.

The chairman of Bama Local Government, Modu Gujja, confirmed that more than a dozen houses were set ablaze and over 100 residents were forced to flee.
