The AFC/M23 coalition fighting the Democratic Republic of Congo government has announced that the shells falling on areas it controls in South Kivu Province are coming from Burundi.
Since the morning of December 5, 2025, the DRC, Burundian and Wazalendo forces have been carrying out attacks in parts of Uvira Territory, including Katogota, Kamanyola and the Luvungi commune.
The shells that fell in the Luvungi center caused many residents to flee to other areas of Uvira where there were no fighting, such as Sange, Runingu, Ndolera and the city of Uvira.
The AFC/M23 Deputy Director for Political Affairs, Bertrand Bisimwa, announced that Burundian troops in Burundi are firing in Kamanyola, Katogota and Luvungi.
He said, “This morning, Burundian troops in Burundi are dropping bombs on densely populated areas in Kamanyola, Katogota and Luvungi, causing the deaths of innocent people including children, and destroying houses, schools, churches and markets.”
Bisimwa posted videos on social media showing how the bombs destroyed homes, with a resident saying that they were in a village near Ngomo Mountain in Kamanyola.
“The first bomb fell here. All the houses were destroyed. Six people died near Ngomo. The situation is serious,” the resident said.
AFC/M23 spokesman Lawrence Kanyuka said that Burundian troops in Burundi have been shelling areas with large civilian populations for more than three days, adding that their fighters are ready to continue fighting for those in danger.
