The AFC/M23 coalition fighting the Democratic Republic of Congo’s government has announced that it has captured the city of Uvira in South Kivu province.
The news was announced by AFC/M23 Spokesperson, Lawrence Kanyuka, in a public message posted on the X social media platform on December 10, 2025.
Kanyuka said that for more than three months, AFC/M23 has condemned hate speech, attacks targeting Congolese people because of their appearance and killings by the DRC military coalition, which includes Burundians.
He said, “Today, the issue has been resolved, and we confirm that the city of Uvira has been liberated. We call on our fellow citizens to resume their activities in peace: AFC/M23 is there to protect them.”
News that AFC/M23 had captured the city of Uvira began to emerge on the evening of December 9. Many DRC, Burundian, Wazalendo and FDLR forces had already fled.
Some residents fled the violence of the DRC government forces when they took control of the town of Uvira. The AFC/M23 asked them to return home, assuring them that they would not be disturbed again.
