On Thursday, dozens of women’s rights activists rallied outside the US embassy in Brussels, voicing anger over possible Trump administration moves to destroy a $9 million stockpile of vital contraceptive supplies meant for women in conflict zones and refugee camps across Africa.
Chanting “shame, shame, shame, Trump is to blame,” about 50 protesters gathered with striking visuals, including wooden crosses marked with “700+ women dead.”
Their focus is a warehouse in Geel, Belgium, where millions of dollars’ worth of US taxpayer funded contraceptive pills, implants, and IUDs remain stuck in storage.
Advocates caution that if these supplies are destroyed, the consequences would be dire, resulting in an estimated 362,000 unintended pregnancies and more than 700 maternal deaths.
