Chadian Ex Prime Minister Succès Masra Slapped with 20-Year Jail Term and Billion CFA Fine

Former Chadian prime minister and opposition figure Succès Masra has been handed a tough sentence of 20 years in prison along with a fine of 1 billion CFA francs.

The charges against him include allegedly spreading “hateful and xenophobic messages” and being complicit in murder linked to a deadly massacre in Mandakao last May, reportedly sparked by inter-community violence.

After the verdict, Masra’s legal team condemned the ruling, calling it a “humiliation” and insisting the accusations were built on “empty files.” They further accused authorities of using the judicial system as a tool to “settle political scores“.

In connection with the same Mandakao massacre, 74 other individuals also faced trial. Reports indicate that 64 of them were likewise sentenced to 20 years in prison for their alleged involvement.Masra had served as Chad’s prime minister from January until May 2024, stepping down after losing in the presidential election.
